Trying to replace ‘said’ as a perfectly good word is one of the telltale marks of an amateur. ‘Said’ keeps the focus on the actual dialogue and the person speaking it. Nobody notices the word ‘said’, but they do notice when you go thesaurus diving.
It’s especially bad if you use ones like ‘asked’ or ‘denied’ or ‘begged’ because then you’re being redundant as well.

At the same time, if a lot of people are talking, then repeating “said” over and over gets annoying as hell.
“I don’t know,” Amanda said.
“It’s okay,” Elicia said. “We’ll make it through this.”
“That’s what you said last week,” Jeremy said, rolling his eyes. “Look where it got us.”
“Shut up!” Elicia said.
In contrast to;
“I don’t know,” Amanda murmured.
“It’s okay,” Elicia said. “We’ll make it through this.”
“That’s what you said last week,” Jeremy snorted, rolling his eyes. “Look where it got us.”
“Shut up!” Elicia snapped.It can put emotion into the words and describe how they’re saying it, without having to describe their feelings every time.

Why is “asked” bad….O.o

My top 3 answers:
1. As a wise man once said “Don’t ask questions! Don’t ask perfectly reasonable questions!” (the Spoony One about Tron: Legacy)
2. Because your government doesn’t want you to ask questions.
3. Because asking is bad and you should feel bad.

I agree with sycophantism though, it’s best to just use the words that are appropriate. Although the good rule of thumb is that it’s better not to repeat yourself unless you’re doing it for emphasis or a comedic effect.
